‘BASE, EVIL, AND VILE’

Mayor speaks of ‘persecution’

The Mayor of Blackstone says that one particular person — believed to be frequent Courier-Record Forum contributor Sam Mordan — has “exposed” the Mayor “to a good bit of persecution.”

Dickens last Friday provided a “progress report” on his official Mayor of Blackstone, VA page on Facebook.

“I think most folks are pleased with the job I’ve done as Mayor,” Dickens wrote, “but there’s always at least one burr for every saddle. Persecution comes in many forms. In all its forms, it is base, evil, and vile and designed to tear down your self-esteem. I am happy to report thus far that my journey as mayor has come mostly with respect and positive interactions.”

Dickens continued, “Having said that, I have been exposed to a good bit of persecution from one individual in particular. Fortunately, this kind of behavior is rare instead of commonplace. Overall, I have to say, so far the positive far outweighs the negative, so my experience has mostly been pleasant.

“I try to remain consistently calm, upbeat, and transparent because I truly believe in the direction the Town is headed in and the quality of the people I serve with. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I am most bothered by those who jump to negative conclusions based on a deep distrust of government despite all the good we do. I am learning, however, that this is often just a knee-jerk reaction some folks have to matters on which they have limited information, so we have to ride it out like a ship cresting waves in the ocean!

“That’s what motivates me to provide the public with as much insight as I can on everything I am at liberty to share, realizing that some things I have to carry in strict confidence even while rumors are swirling! Welcome to the world of politics, I guess!”
