BIG MOVES BY CO.

Registrar’s Office, Pickett Park

After nearly three hours of closed door discussion, the Nottoway Board of Supervisors last Thursday night passed two significant motions, 5-0.

The first motion is to advertise and hold a public hearing Dec. 18th on proposed relocation of the Voter Registrar’s Office from the former Burkeville Elementary School — where it has operated for about six years — to the former BB&T building in downtown Blackstone, where the County Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue’s offices moved earlier this year.

That motion also includes moving the District 1 polling precinct from the former school to Burkeville Fire Station, where it was located for many years. Early in-person voting would move to Blackstone from Burkeville under the proposal.

A second motion calls for advertising and holding a hearing Dec. 18th on proposed sale of part of the Countyowned Pickett Park property.

Chairman Bill Collins this week said the County has received two offers — for parcels 43-130 (183 acres) and a part of 43-69. He said a letter of intent has been requested for all of parcel 43-69, which is inside the Main Gate and the remainder of the Pickett Park property.

Collins said the full board has not yet agreed on dollar amounts offered and that negotiations continue.

Thursday night’s votes came during a Board worksession. “We had a lot of exponentially hard decisions tonight,” said District Three Supervisor Daphne Norton. “A lot was put on us. We’re trying to make the best decisions we can for the citizens.”
