A former Nottoway County preacher, who was convicted more than a decade ago of stealing from the church he pastored, is in more trouble.
Rev. Tyree Nedro Smith in 2014 was sentenced to 90 years in prison with 88 1/2 years suspended and ordered to pay back Poplar Lawn Baptist Church near Blackstone a total of $125,000 as well as $4,750 to Farm Bureau, for a total of $129,750.
Nottoway Commonwealth’s Attorney Leanne Watrous, who took office here in 2018, issued a Show Cause for Smith in April because, according to the most recent court records, he has made paid only $9,662.10, leaving an outstanding balance due in the amount of $120,087.
Court records show Smith today residing in Goldvein, VA — an unincorporated hamlet in Faquier County. He was arrested on April 25th. A Status Hearing scheduled for last Monday, July 14th, was continued to October 27th in Nottoway Circuit Court.
Rev. Smith can be seen preaching on YouTube as a Dec. 2023 guest at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Christiansted, Virgin Islands. He was introduced at that 5th Sunday Service as a special guest, Pastor Tyree Smith of Salem Baptist Church in King George, VA.
He also can be found on Facebook, as recently as July of this year, as Pastor of Silver Hill Baptist Church in Bealeton, VA, located in Fauquier County.
