A Petersburg man, who was clocked speeding at 103 mph in Nottoway County, received an active sentence of 30 days in jail — but will be allowed to serve that time in home incarceration.
Hugo Romare Jones, 44, last week in General District Court received 90 days in jail with 60 days suspended on the conviction for Reckless Driving/103 mph in a 60 Zone.
Jones was fined $400 and ordered to pay $129 in court costs. Additionally, Jones’ driver’s license was suspended for 60 days by Judge Thomas Stark IV.
Defense attorney E. Gordon Peters of Lynchburg presented medical records suggesting that serving time at Piedmont Regional Jail or any other facility would prove a hardship for his client. Jones still must complete a special driving class and provide that certification no later than Jan. 30, 2026. If Jones fails to comply with that condition, the Judge may revoke the suspended sentence.
Jones was stopped at 2:47 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, April 12th, by State Trooper Judy Winn. The traffic stop occurred on Rt. 460 West, west of the Rt. 606 (Cottage Road) overpass north of Blackstone. He was driving a 2022 Jeep Truck.
Nottoway County in recent years has witnessed an increase in speeders ticketed for exceeding 80, 90, and even 100 mph on Rts. 460 and 360.
