Independence Day “festivities” got off to an early start for Blackstone Police.
Chief of Police Sam Murphy reports that 21-year-old Rodney Nasir Morgan of Farmville Road, Meherrin, has been charged with Speeding (40 mph/25 mph), DUI, Possession of a Schedule I/II Drug, Possession of a Firearm while in Possession of Schedule I/II Drug, and Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated.
Murphy said that at approximately 3:45 a.m. last Friday morning, July 4th, Corporal Shay Farley stopped a vehicle for traveling 40 mph in the 25 zone on South Main Street — between Church Street and West Entrance Road.
According to Murphy, the driver “was found to be intoxicated and was charged with Driving Under the Influence. While in the process of working the DUI, a small amount of material that tested positive for methamphetamine was located in the vehicle — as well as a 7.62 x 39 pistol. According to various gun websites, the 7.62×39 pistol is a large-framed handgun “that offers the same power, accuracy and reliability as the iconic AK-47 rifle.”
An appearance is scheduled for Morgan today (Wednesday, July 9th) in Nottoway General District Court.
Online court records show that Morgan is awaiting trial in December on a charge of driving 91 mph in a 55 mph zone in Virginia Beach. That alleged offense occurred June 25th of this year.
His prior traffic record also includes three speeding convictions — 72/55 in Prince Edward, 42/25 in Prince Edward, and 69/60 in Appomattox. A Shoplifting charge against Morgan in Prince Edward County was nol prossed (not prosecuted).
