A Halifax County woman is facing several charges for her role in a motor vehicle crash that claimed the life a Nottoway County man and seriously injured his girlfriend.

Stephanie Wayne Powell, 40, of Scottsburg, was arrested Nov. 5th and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter DUI, Driving on a Revoked/Suspended License, DWI (1st Offense), and Failing to Drive on Right Side of Highway.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. Monday night, July 28th, on Kenbridge Road (Rt. 40) — about two-tenths of a mile south of Dobbins Bridge Road. Three medical helicopters responded.

Police say Ms. Powell was driving south (toward Kenbridge) in a Nissan Pathfinder, which crossed the centerline and struck — head-on — a Chevy Impala driven by Cody Peyton, 26. Peyton died on the chopper while en route to Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond.

Peyton’s passenger and girlfriend, 30-year-old Julie Elizabeth Boyd of Blackstone, suffered a shattered pelvis in the crash.

Julie was 17 weeks, five days pregnant at the time of the crash and her unborn baby remarkably was healthy after the crash. She was flown to a hospital, and surgery to repair Julie’s pelvis had to be delayed to protect the baby. She returned home nine days after the crash.

Julie’s pregnancy is going well, her sister, Jessica Schleife of Blackstone, told the Courier- Record this week, with the due date Christmas Day.

Julie’s late boyfriend, Cody, lived previously in Louisa County but, at the time of his death, was living on Rocky Hill Road (Rt. 153) north of Blackstone. He was also the father of Julie’s son, who turned 1 on Aug. 3rd while Julie was still in the hospital.

Ms. Powell, the defendant, also was injured in the crash and also was flown by helicopter to an area hospital. She was taken to Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville after her arrest.
