SHERIFF SAYS HOLDING CELL IS DAMAGED

Nottoway authorities say a Lunenburg County man went berserk in a holding cell after being arrested last week for DUI and then continued his tantrum on the way to Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville.

The prisoner became so unruly — allegedly trying to kickout the back winow — that a Deputy Sheriff had to pull over on Rt. 460 in Crewe near Beamer Field and request back-up and additional restraints.

Sheriff Robert Jones says that 47-year-old Ernest Lee Foster of Kenbridge initially was arrested for DUI Monday night, March 16th after deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 8000 block of The Falls Road (Rt. 49 South).

Jones said “numerous” callers reported a tan SUV pulling in-and-out of various driveways and also was observed on Snead Spring Road.

Deputies located the vehicle on The Falls Road and arrested Foster for DUI First Offense, Refusing DUI Test, and Drinking While Driving.

Jones said that while Foster was at the Sheriff ’s Office and placed in a holding cell, “he began acting out and kicking the cell door and punching the window in the cell. Jones said Foster didn’t break the window but that the cell door will need repairs.

Jones said Foster’s tantrum prohibited a Magistrate from making bond determination so he was ordered held without bond at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville.

Jones said Foster was “still uncooperative” when being placed in a patrol car and that five minutes into the drive to PRJ, “Foster laid over and and began to kick the back door window” of the patrol car.

The deputy pulled over and, with help from responding officers, was able to place additional restraints on Foster. Jones said that in addition to the DUI and related charges, Foster is charged with two counts of Intentional Property Damage (holding cell) and one count of Obstructing/Resisting Arrest.

Online court records list Foster as a convicted felon who’s also facing two Drug Possession charges from last October as well as a weapons charge in Nottoway General District Court. A hearing on those charges is set for next week.
