Nottoway Supervisors likely will have to wait until 2027, but they’re not giving up holding a referendum to add another penny to the state sales tax to help fund paid fire and EMS.
Supervisor Dicky Ingram first pitched the idea several months ago.
Ingram last Thursday recalled that Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed a bill that would have let Prince Edward County add a penny for local school construction.
Ingram said he believes that Nottoway might have a better chance when Abigail Spanberger (D) takes office in January. “Everybody tells me the Governorto be has a soft spot in her heart for Nottoway County. Maybe she’ll help us out.”
Ingram said, “I’d like to push to see if we can have a referendum.” Supervisor Steve Bowen said state law doesn’t allow referendums for raising local sales tax for fire and EMS.
Ingram said Nottoway should get together with other rural counties facing similar paid EMS and fire challenges and pitch the proposal regionally.
