State Police have charged a 17-year-old driver in a fatal crash that claimed the life of a wheelchair-bound passenger. The two-vehicle crash occurred in Amelia County at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday evening, Aug. 10th, at the intersection of Rt. 153 (Military Road) and Five Forks Road.
According to State Police, the 17-year-old was driving east on Five Forks Road in a 2015 Chevy Silverado pickup and didn’t stop at a stop sign. The truck struck a 2018 Honda Accord, which was traveling north on Rt. 153. Impact caused the Silverado to overturn several times.
The front seat passenger of the Silverado, identified as 42-year-old Jamie Wayne Johnson of Lynchburg, died at the scene. He was seated in a wheelchair that was properly secured in the truck. Police say the teen driver of the Silverado was flown by MedFlight to Chippenham with injuries described as not life-threatening. A backseat passenger in the truck also was transported to Chippenham with injuries described as not life-threatening.
Police say the driver of the Honda, identified as 73-year-old Dorothy Love El of Amelia, was transported to Chippenham with injuries described as not life-threatening. Police say all four individuals involved were wearing their seatbelts, and that the 17-year-old Silverado driver has been charged with Reckless Driving.
