PRISON COOLING MEASURES

After our page article last week — about high temperatures and state prison facilities that aren’t air-conditioned including Nottoway Correctional Center near Burkeville — the Virginia Dept. of Corrections (VADOC) this week responded:

“Nottoway Correctional Center was built in 1984. The facility currently does not have air conditioning for inmates. The VADOC is implementing significant heat mitigation resources for inmates in buildings without air conditioning, including the installation of fans, providing extra ice and water pouches, adjustments to scheduling, and the location of some activities to accommodate for high temperatures.

“Nottoway Work Center, which was built in 1995, does have air-conditioning. Administrative offices at Nottoway Correctional Center also have air conditioning. Lunenburg Correctional Center, which opened in 1995 near Victoria, does have air-conditioning for its inmate population.”
