READY FOR ROUNDABOUT?

Rt. 40 construction to begin in Spring

Five contractors have expressed interest in building VDOT’s long-planned roundabout at the intersection of Darvills Road (Rt. 40) and Military Road east of Blackstone.

VDOT’s Aaron French last Thursday night told the Nottoway Board of Supervisors that the bidding period closes Jan. 28th. “We are getting closer and closer to getting our bids for the roundabout.”

The project was approved in 2019 with an estimated price tag of $7.2 million in VDOT funds. The revised estimate is $8.1 million.

Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. Many area residents have complained publicly on social media, saying a roundabout isn’t necessary — that larger flashing lights and rumble strips at stop signs on Military Road would help prevent those entering and leaving Fort Pickett from failing to properly yield right-of-way to motorists on Rt. 40.
