RESIDENTS PAYING EARLY

Nottoway County taxes due Dec. 5th

Tax bill payments to Nottoway County are coming in steadily before the December 5th due date, Supervisor Dicky Ingram reported Thursday night.

“The Treasurer says she’s real tickled with the amount of money that’s coming in already,” said the District 1 Supervisor. “A lot of people are paying ahead of time.”

Overall this year, County taxes on real estate increased 22%, and Personal Property rates rose 27%. Those hikes come on the heels of 20% increases in 2024 on Real Estate — after reassessment that saw land values increase on average by 30% countywide — and 19% increases on Personal Property.

In other news, County Administrator Steve Bowen reported that renovations continue in Burkeville at the former YakAttack building that will serve as Nottoway County’s new animal shelter. He said he’s hoping for “some kind of opening” in February or March for the estimated $2.1 million project.

Supervisors voted 5-0 Thursday to “enter into a public comment period for 30 days” for citizens to offer comments to the County on its proposed Public Private Education Facilities & Infrastructure Act. The County has reached an agreement — with no estimated dollar figures publicly disclosed — regarding courthouse facility construction.

Board Chairman Bill Collins said he was alarmed by a recent newspaper article involving a drug suspect who had been free with 53 years of prison time suspended from prior convictions. “It’s kind of eggregious when you have someone like that as a member of society.”

Supervisor John Roark agreed and smiled, “I don’t want to comment. Somebody might want to bring me up…”

Roark may have been making light of his 2021 formal censure by the previous Board during his first term.
