Nottoway Supervisors are being asked to step-up efforts to give senior citizens age 65-andolder tax relief.
Susan Fee of Blackstone asked officials Thursday night why taxes can be raised rather suddenly but finding adopting relief for seniors appears as if it will take years,
“We elected you. Are you not the voice of the people? Are you not the guardians of your constituents who placed in your hand the use of tax dollars paid in good faith?”
She also questioned the need for a new courthouse and a new animal shelter, which she referred to as a dog park. “You’re putting dogs before needy citi- zens in our county…dogs don’t contribute a thing but they’re getting benefits. Where are the priorities?”
Supervisor Dicky Ingram later in the meeting corrected some of Mrs. Fee’s assertions, reminding citizens that the County is under court order to improve court facilities, and the County animal shelter has been cited by the state for violations several times in the past, and the County can be fined $1,000 per day for such.
Mrs. Fee also told Supervisors during her remarks, “If government can give to illegals — who are not citizens, who don’t belong here, and who have not contributed a penny — then surely it’s time to provide tax relief for Nottoway County citizens, especially the elderly.”
