TOWN HIRES NEXT TREASURER

Amelia resident to begin duties here August 11th

The Town of Blackstone’s next Treasurer is Karen Morris of Amelia County.

Mrs. Morris will begin her duties Aug. 11th at a starting annual salary of $65,000. She was the unanimous pick of Town Council at its July 21st meeting and among 25 who applied for the position. Council interviewed Mrs. Morris and two other candidates.

Mrs. Morris has former banking and branch manager experience at the former BB&T and former Truist in Amelia County. Her husband “Benji” serves on the Amelia County Board of Supervisors.

Council budgeted $54,000 in the current budget for the successor to former Treasurer Brittany Morgan, who resigned April 25th. Town Manager Philip

Vannoorbeeck told Council on July 21st that it may have to make a mid-year appropriation for Mrs. Morris’ salary.

Former Treasurer Morgan’s March 20th resignation letter and a follow-up letter in April painted a less-than-desirable work environment at Town Hall. She alleged that some members of Council have used their elected positions to seek and/or receive special privileges. Those perks have included special notification when their payments for Town utilities were past due.

Mrs. Morgan was making $59,488 annually at the time of her departure. She had served as Town Treasurer since 2017 and had been employed with the Town since 2015.
