WHO MAKES HOW MUCH?

Supervisor seeks, obtains list of County salaries

SIX-FIGURE PAY IS DISCLOSED BY REQUEST

Four of Nottoway County’s top 10 highest-paid employees make six-figure salaries, and that number in the school division is seven-out-of-10.

The salaries of those employees — as well as each of Nottoway County’s five Constitutional Officers — are disclosed in a FOIA request made by District Two Supervisor John Roark.

Roark on Sept. 19th announced — in a 55-minute Facebook Live address — that he’ll soon be leaving office, citing health concerns after his Feb. 9th stroke.

Roark on Sept. 27th — in a 12-minute Facebook Live — told viewers to “get their popcorn” because “there’s a bomb coming” with potential damaging information to the County and/ or someone involved in County government. Roark again said that he’s stepping down but that he also wants to make sure there are potential successors interested who will not “just go along to get along.” He warned of a potential “hand-picked” successor by some who doesn’t meet his preferred criteria of a fighter for the people.

Roark last Tuesday, Sept. 30th, went Live again. He was considerably less animated while urging residents upset about County tax bills to attend the Board’s next regular meeting on Thursday, October 16th. In that same address, Roark revealed that he had filed a FOIA request on behalf of a citizen seeking the top 10 highest salaries paid in Nottoway County government and the school division, in addition to salaries of Constitutional officers. The Courier-Record issued a FOIA request for information provided to Supervisor Roark and received that data the same day — this past Monday, Oct. 6th.

He received this response from the County Administrator’s Office: “They do not have a formal list. They maintain a general punch list of capital improvement needs across schools, but specific timeframes for projects have not yet been determined. The School Board would need the opportunity to review and prioritize the identified needs before it could be finalized.”
