CREWE — The Total Life Center of Southside Virginia (TLC-SOVA) has been awarded $75,000 to conduct environmental health education and outreach in Nottoway County communities, helping residents identify and reduce common home health risks.
The funding was awarded through the EPA Region 3 Thriving Communities Grantmaking (TCGM) Program, funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and administered by the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI), the Region 3 grantmaker.
As part of this initiative, TLCSOVA will offer free community workshops and do-it-yourself (DIY) home testing kits focused on mold, lead, and radon awareness and prevention.
Workshops will be led by trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) and will offer hands-on demonstrations, practical education, and connections to local home health resources.
“This funding allows us to meet residents where they are and provide practical tools they can use to understand their home environment better,” said Dr. Jackie A. Green-August, Executive Director of Total Life Center of Southside Virginia. “By pairing education with trusted Community Health Workers, we’re helping families take simple, informed steps toward healthier homes.”
One upcoming opportunity for residents is a free Mold Prevention Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 28th, at the Crewe Library.

One-hour sessions will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Participants will receive a free DIY test kit, take part in a hands-on demonstration, and engage in a question-and-answer session focused on mold prevention and indoor air quality.
The project builds local knowledge and community capacity by equipping residents with information about environmental health risks while strengthening the role of Community Health Workers as trusted educators and connectors within rural communities.
