A naked man showed-up Monday afternoon outside Central High School in Lunenburg County. That’s taking Charger Pride to new heights. Thank you, Lunenburgers, for trying to out-do Blackstone’s salacious headlines. But you’ve got to take better photos. Maybe next time.

Which will happen first — the Vatican will elect a new Pope, or Blackstone Town Council will appoint an Interim Mayor? We’ll be looking for white smoke billowing from Town Hall. Smoke isn’t hard to find these days. Elm Street sure has been on fire. Some of the “Cardinals” at Town Hall haven’t been behaving divinely.

Speaking of smoke-filled rooms, the Nottoway School Board, I hear, is on the verge of a vote and hiring the Division’s next Superintendent. Our best wishes to whomever is hired to succeed Dr. Tameshia Grimes. The division’s next leader will inherit a long list of challenges, including declining enrollment, and what appears to be a fractured Board.

I know it’s exempt under the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), but I believe the Town needs to be transparent and release its report on the internal investigation that forced the recent resignation of Mayor Ben Green. Names of employees who gave their accounts on April 7th can be redacted. The names of the former Mayor, Town Manager Vannoorbeeck, and Councilman Chris Page don’t need to be redacted because they already have been made public. Citizens still have many questions and deserve to know what’s taking place in their government. I’m told the report is 16 pages long and makes for interesting reading. If anyone has a copy, we’ve got a mail slot in our front door.

And which member or members of Council told some female employees that “all of you white girls look the same?” Which member of Council threw a fit at Town Hall on utility disconnection day and demanded to be addressed as “The Honorable?” Treasurer Brittany Morgan’s recent resignation letter should be publicly addressed by Council — unless of course her claims are accurate. If I were on Council and falsely accused of such behavior, I’d issue a statement ASAP, such as “It won’t me.”

Sad news in Amelia, where a high school student took his own life after reportedly being bullied. I know “Chronic Absenteeism” is a statistic that educators want to keep low due to state SOL standards. But when a child takes his or her own life, they’re NEVER going to be “Present” again. Expel the bullies and to hell with “Chronic Absenteeism” rates. Or make bullies spend the rest of the year (or their high school career) at an alternative school that has a boot camp element/environment to it. The cut-ups and the bullies are ruining public education for those who want to learn in a distraction-free environment. It all begins at home, but schools have to deal with the results of careless parents. So quit playing around and deal with it.

It looks like the armory is going to be completed on or before July 7th, and the Town is seeking bids for a 67-space parking lot beside and behind the 1936 landmark. This year’s Arts & Crafts Festival (Sept. 13-14th) will be held on High Street and in the armory for the first time since 2022.

The Blackstone Ministerial Association’s observance of the National Day of Prayer is set for tomorrow (Thursday, May 1st), in the Town Square from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. That’s a whole lot of prayin’. It sure can’t hurt anything. It’s a lot easier for many to pray on Facebook. I especially enjoy the folks who post, “Unspoken Prayer Requests, Please.” If you want us to pray for you, tell us what’s up! I like my prayers to be precise.

Nottoway Supervisors will hold a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night (Thursday, May 1st) on establishing a proposed countywide fire zone and district, and a countywide emergency services district. Those steps are required to establish a new tax on real estate and personal property to provide more funds for EMS and fire agencies. We’re going to finally realize how good we’ve had it for so long with volunteer fire & EMS in Nottoway.
