A trespasser got the death penalty last week at Nottoway courthouse. We’re told that stench from the mouse, which died behind one of the walls in an office, was something else. Days earlier, a cooling unit in a ceiling malfuctioned, releasing water and forcing ceiling tilesdownward into judge’s chambers of the General District Court building.

The Nottoway School Board voted 5-0 Thursday night to name the football field at the high school stadium, “Coach Joe May Field.” May is among the inductees selected for this year’s Wall of Fame, and he and others will be honored at halftime Friday, Sept. 26th. Naming the field after Coach May is fitting and overdue.

It’s not clear exactly why, but Supervisor John Roark — near the end of last Thursday’s worksession — turned and looked directly at Board Chairman Bill Collins and publicly apologized. We don’t know what the apology was for. “I’m sorry, Bill,” Roark said out of the blue. Collins replied, “You’re sorry?” Roark nodded yes. Collins replied, “I appreciate that. I accept your apology.” Supervisor Bo Toth expressed relief and praised both men. What in the world did we miss?

Nottoway County Public Schools re-open today (Wednesday) for students. Based on discussion at Thursday night’s School Board meeting, students had best not get caught with their cell phone once the school day begins, and vaping is going to be taken very seriously.

Congrats to Nottoway Cares for a successful fundraiser Saturday at The Inn at Blackstone (page 8). Joyce and I took our beloved “Daisy,” but she didn’t last long. It was sensory overload for our three-year-old Golden Doodle. She takes after her Daddy.

Prayers for the Nottoway deputy who was shot in the hand during Saturday morning’s foot pursuit that followed a 90 mph chase down Rt. 153 and crash at 460 & 153. We’re told the wounded deputy is Chris Joyner and that the suspect, who was shot dead by State Police, fired a weapon that struck Joyner’s gun and caused it to go off or “explode” in his hand. That’s unconfirmed but from a good source. We pray that the deputy makes a full recovery. As this column was being written at 5 a.m. Tuesday, State Police still had not identified the deceased.

Why so fast in those conditions at that time of day? To whom did the truck belong? During the pursuit as it entered Nottoway, units were warned that there was a gun in the suspect’s vehicle. Did the driver display that gun and/or fire it during the pursuit? Was he wanted? Was he running from something when initially clocked in Amelia? When he allegedly got out of the wreckage in Nottoway, fled on foot, and displayed a firearm, who shot first? How many shots were fired and by how many different persons? Some neighbors in the area reported hearing dozens of shots.
