AROUND TOWN

Observations & Opinion

Folks sure are ready for Spring. I’ve never seen the golf course as busy in early March as I did this past Sunday. It was a great day and it looks like the warm-up will continue this weekend. We “Spring Forward” this Sunday, so there’s more daylight coming, too.

It appears that CBS6 and the Blackstone Chamber of Commerce — along with Citizens Bank & Trust Co. — are working on a potential deal in which the TV station would install a live camera on top of the Main Branch. It would be great publicity for Blackstone and allow us to better plan our morning and especially our afternoon commutes. “You are looking live at downtown Blackstone: Our downtown camera shows a long line of cars on Brown Street, all trying to make that dreaded left turn onto Church, so expect delays. You may want to try taking Mill Street beside Shiloh Baptist and coming out by the fire station so you can get home quicker…Also, out on the far end of South Main Street, police have pulled yet another motorist caught in that tricky new 25 mph zone.”

If CBS6 really wants a good view of Blackstone — and Nottoway County — it might want to consider adding cameras on top of the new high rise courthouse palace once that $20-30 million project is completed. Of course, I’m just guessing because no one seems willing or able to discuss exactly what the County is going to do. But Supervisors did budget $642,000 for a “first draw” so architects can get paid on April 1st — a fitting date.

I sure would like to know more about that homemade bomb discovered last month inside a home on Old Shore Road. I’m glad the resident is OK as well as law enforcement officers, who again found themselves in harm’s way. I worry that more of us will have to deal with bombs in public setttings after the U.S. and Israel action against Iran. I guess playing offense is better than defense — and Iran has been a thorn in America’s side since 1979 — but the world today is smaller. Don’t think for one minute that we’re not going to see retaliation in our homeland. How many sleeper cells have entered our country over the past several years thanks to porous borders and lax visa enforcement under the previous administration?

This is dangerous territory, but here we go: I was asked by a Nottoway Democrat — one I respect immensely — to text her positive things that President Trump has done.

I responded by telling her that I’m very concerned about our attack on Iran. But I always stand with our troops and Commander-in-Chief during such times. Donald Trump in 30 days eliminated illegal border crossings. For 40 years, Trump has been saying the same thing: America has made too many stupid trade deals and other deals. There was a time when big media and celebrities agreed and urged him to run for President. I don’t like his mouth and childish remarks about others (I admit some of the nicknames are funny), but the national Democratic Party today has veered so far left, it’s off the cliff. I voted for him mainly for 1) Border Security; 2) Fair Trade; and 3) Make America Healthy Again (Bobby Kennedy is right about so many things). I also voted for fewer wars and more transparency with the Epstein and JFK files — fairly disappointed on those fronts. But I truly believe that while the President certainly loves himself, he truly loves this country and wants America to become a world leader in quality of life.

Some national and state Democrats are fighting for the right of women (and I suppose men, too) to have abortions at time of birth, grown males playing sports against females, and re-opening the southern border. Who in their right mind can oppose requiring ID before voting (unless one wants to cheat)? Some Virginia Dems in Richmond have proposed electronic voting. How secure is THAT? I support the Jewish people and people of Israel, but I believe the GOVERNMENT of Israel has too much influence on U.S. foreign policy. I wonder how many Congressional folks bought more stocks in defense companies about a week or so ago? I don’t like Trump’s recent action in Venezuela, and I am VERY worried about the strikes against Iran. I pray for our country. My Democrat friend responded politely and said she, too, is praying for our country. I wish more folks could exchange opinions in the positive spirit that we did.

If America is going to return to manufacturing, we must have labor. That means LEGAL immigration must continue. Those who came here illegally but who have been living alongside us peacefully and productively, we should provide a quick path to citizenship. Americans don’t make much anymore. That includes babies.
