Lady Cougars win at R-H, lose at KW

Due to a muddy softball field at home, #8 seed Nottoway was forced to travel last Wednesday to #9 Randolph-Henry, but the Lady Cougars weren’t complaining after a hard-fought 4-3 Region 2A victory in red clay country.

Freshman Jayden Banks smashed a 215-ft. line drive homer that also scored Alaina Vaughan in the bottom of the 2nd. Katherine Gravely doubled and scored moments later on a wild throw. Nottoway led, 3-0 after two. “That was headsup base-running by Kat,” Head Coach Travis Andrews said of Gravely’s score.

The Lady Cougars had survived a scare in the top of the 2nd, allowing only one run after the Lady Statesmen had loaded the bases.

Nottoway scored what would prove to be its winning run in the 3rd when Vaughan doubled and drove-in Taylor Atkinson.

Senior pitcher Cheyenne Estep allowed six hits and struckout eight batters while walking two.

Andrews praised Estep for solid pitching and the Lady Cougars’ “bend, don’t break” defense.

Nottoway’s 2025 play-off run, however, ended the next day (Thursday) at #1 King William with an 8-1 road loss.

The Lady Cougars’ only run came in the 5th when sophomore Cambria Ashford doubled, scoring Gravely.
