The Nottoway Cougars played old school, “Joe May” style football Friday night, rushing for more than 300 yards and shutting-out the visiting Amelia Raiders, 26-0.

Senior back Anton Carter, Jr. ran 22 times for 301 yards and three touchdowns — all in the second half. The game was tied 0-0 at intermission before Nottoway wore down the Raiders. Junior Ben Sykes scored Nottoway’s final TD on a 15- yard run.

Sykes also recovered a fumble, and junior Jadarrian “Hollywood” Hendricks intercepted an Amelia pass.

The Cougars improved to 4-1 on Wall of Fame Night, which was kicked-off with a brief ceremony formally dedicating Coach Joe May Field — a naming decision approved unanimously by the School Board in August. May and his family and many former players were in attendance. May also became the first Cougar coach to be named to the school’s Wall of Fame.

Nottoway amassed 337 yards on the ground, and junior QB DeAyrius Wright completed 2-of-6 passes for 18 yards.

Leading tacklers for Nottoway included sophomore Nasir Delaney with three stops and three assists, plus a QB sack. Junior DaRome Thompson had five assists, and junior Mason Jennings had four.

Nottoway will travel this coming Friday, Oct. 3rd to 2-3 Cumberland. The Dukes lost last week, 16-14, at Charles City. Cumberland’s two wins so far this season came against Mathews (46-0) and William Campbell (32-16).
