Nottoway High School’s JV girls’ basketball team won the James River District Championship, holding-off Central of Lunenburg, 36-32, in a physical nailbiter last Wednesday on the Lady Cougars’ home court.
Nottoway enjoyed a 19-12 lead midday through the 3rd quarter, but the Lady Chargers clawed back and briefly took the lead in the 4th.
Things looked bleak for Nottoway late in the 4th. Leading 33-32 with 1:30 remaining, the Lady Cougars fouled a Lunenburg player attempting a threepoint shot.
That JV Lady Charger then proceeded to miss all three free throws. Nottoway rebounded, and the ball made its way into the hands of freshman Allie Shelton, who drained a clutch three-pointer as the home crowd went wild. Nottoway held-on for a four-point victory.
Shelton finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal. Freshman Janaria Stokes scored 6 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, made 5 assists and 5 steals. Sophomore Jayden Banks had 4 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.

JV Girls’ Glory! Nottoway’s NaVonya Wright (#2) hoisted the trophy after 36-32 victory over Lunenburg. Janaria Stokes (#1) drove to the hoop in 4th quarter as an excited Head Coach Johnny Coombs watched closely. JV Lady Cougar guard Jayden Banks (#3) made three steals. “She’s a major part of this championship team, and her leadership and contributions throughout the season were vital to our success.”
Other championship game contributors:
Freshman NaVonye Wright: 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks 5 steals; freshman A’Niya Johnson: 3 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 assist; sophomore Promise Tracy: 3 points, 3 steals, 2 assists, 1 rebound; sophomore Miracle Murphy: 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block.
JV Head Coach Johnny Coombs recognized player Ivy Bush, who was unable to play in Wednesday’s championship game.
Coach Coombs also recognized players Layla Ferrell and Lamari Lawrence “for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to this program. Their effort, support, and team-first mentality played an important role in helping us reach this championship level.”
Coombs, whose staff included assistant coaches Waverly Jackson and Mario Jennings, said the championship team was built on “strong defense, teamwork, and commitment. Every player contributed to our success, and their dedication both on and off the court made this championship run possible.”
The JV Lady Cougars finished the season with a 10-1 overall record, 8-0 in the James River District. Nottoway’s only defeat came in its first game of the season — a 37-25 loss to visiting Dinwiddie.
Nottoway, which also claimed the JV regular season district title, beat the Lady Chargers earlier in the season, 43-34, in a game played Jan. 9th at Nottoway.
