ONE-RUN BALLGAMES

Lady Cougars win and lose, 3-2

The “cardiac” Nottoway Lady Cougars played back-toback games last week that had identical final scores of 3-2 — but different endings.

Nottoway was leading Thursday, 2-0, in the bottom of the 7th inning at Amelia when the Lady Raiders rallied and prevailed, 3-2. A fielding error followed by a wild pitch surrendered the decisive run. Katherine Gravely and Cheyenne Estep scored Nottoway’s two runs. Estep went 2-for-4 at the plate and struck-out eight Amelia batters. She was pitching a no-hitter into the 7th and finished the game allowing only one hit and three walks. Cambria Ashford went 2-for-2. Nottoway had whipped Amelia previously, 13-3, on April 8th.

Two days earlier (Tuesday) at home, the score was tied 2-2 with Randolph-Henry in the bottom of the 7th when Estep doubled off the leftfield wall and, moments later, was driven home for the winning run by Ashford. Gravely went 2-for-3 with a double and scored one run. Estep scored twice and notched another win pitching.

Playing on the road, Nottoway whipped Colonial Heights on Monday, April 28th, 16-5. In the final inning, the Lady Cougars scored eight runs, which offset eight Nottoway errors. Jayden Banks and Anari Smith (3- for-3) each tripled and each scored three runs. Mariana Eppes had four RBI.

The Lady Cougars entered this week 8-6 overall (4-3 James River District).
