In dreary conditions last Monday, Sept. 29th, at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Nottoway freshman golfer Cam McDaniel shot an 18-hole 80 (+8), and senior Carsten Beck shot 81.
Both earned All-Region honors, but the James River District champion Cougar team failed to advance to next week’s State Tournament.
Nottoway Head Coach Whip Wilson called it a “Blue Monday” but said the Cougars “still had a great season, winning the district title and district tournament after a 25-2 regular season record.”
The Cougars finished a disappointing 4th in Suffolk. Only the top two teams advance to the State. Scores by All-Region honorees McDaniel and Beck also weren’t low enough to qualify them individually for the state.
Three-time James River District Golfer of the Year, Colton Lewis, shot 82 for the Cougars, and brother Spencer Lewis shot 91.
Coach Wilson, the JRD Coach of the Year, said that scores by Nottoway’s top golfers were well above their overall season averages. “Although this can easily happen in the game of golf, the timing was devastating.”
Windsor High (325 strokes) won the Regional championship, followed by Nottoway’s district rival, Randolph-Henry (329). The Cougars beat the Statesmen three out of five times during the regular season and also in the District Tournament at The Manor in Farmville.
Both Randolph-Henry and Windsor advance to the State Tournament, set for next Tuesday, Oct. 14th, at Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock (Essex County). Poquoson (330) finished 3rd and was followed by Nottoway at 334.
Central of Lunenburg senior Parker Hite of Kenbridge shot a solid 77 for the Chargers — finishing 4th in the Regional Tournament. He earned All-Region honors and punched his ticket to Tappahannock next Tuesday.
