Leading 8-6 after the 1st quarter, the Nottoway Cougars came alive Friday night in varsity football at Cumberland, scoring 24 points in the 2nd quarter and manhandling the Dukes, 60-20.
Nottoway senior Anton Carter, Jr. had another big night — rushing for 226 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns. He also returned a kick-off 75 yards for another score.
Cougar transfer Tyzhon Taylor, a sophomore, was also impressive — running 11 times for 221 yards and two TDs, including a 55-yard burst from scrimmage. Junior Da’Veon Pettis was solid, running nine times for 65 yards.
Freshman Ephraim Stokes ran for a touchdown, as did junior QB DeAyrius Wright. Each also fumbled.
Defensively for Nottoway, sophomore Nasir Delaney and junior Esmar Henderson, Jr. each recorded two QB sacks. Junior Marcus Eppes intercepted a Dukes’ pass, and Delaney pounced on a Cumberland fumble.
Senior Elliot Waite was involved in seven tackles, and Kahlil Drawhorn made two tackles for losses.
Nottoway improved to 5-1 overall and currently is in a three-way tie for first place in the James River District with unbeatens Buckingham and Central of Lunenburg.
The Cougars will host winless Prince Edward this coming Friday night, which will be Cougar Homecoming, Military Appreciation Night, and Alumni Night (See related stories on page 7).
